Laura- All right today is Wednesday and I’m doing a recorded Women Crush Wednesday. I feel a little weird about it so don’t judge me. Right now I’m gonna open up Shebeen Black Hop IPA and so while we’re drinking this my Woman Crush Wednesday for today is one of my bestest friends Grace Clifford. Alright, so what I’m gonna do is I’m gonna go through all of the 20 questions we usually go through and post on my blog. I’m gonna transcribe this and post on my blog too. But yeah so I wanted to try something new. Here we go.
Alright Grace… where are you from?
Grace– I am originally from Brookfield Connecticut and I now live in Danbury, Connecticut one town over.
L– Cool, so what is your favorite local beer?
G– That’s hard. Um, I would have to say my favorite local beer…oh man… is probably anything from Shebeen. Shebeen is my my new fave.
L– And that’s were drinking right now!
G– That is what we are drinking, well, what you’re drinking. I’m like cheating. I’m drinking a Mimosa. Whatever…whatever… haters gonna hate. Yes, I’ll probably drink anything from Shebeen Brewing which is located in Watertown, Connecticut.
L– Alright, so how long have you been loving the craft brews? How do you go from drinking like Natty Ice to craft beer?
G– I really got into decent beer when I was probably about a junior or senior in college. By that point I had a little bit more money because I’ve been working in the summer so I could stop drinking crappy beer. And so I started getting into the good beer scene probably right around then. And then it’s it’s gotten progressively more hard-core over the years especially since I started dating my now husband whose family is very much into beer.
L– Alright, what is your favorite style of beer?
G– I am definitely more of an ale, porter, stout kind of person. I really am not into saisons, sessions, sours. You know I know all that stuff is trendy now but it’s really just not my jam. I’m very picky about IPAs but there are some that I really do like. But in general I tend to go more for the darker… the darker beers.
L– You’re breaking my heart.
G– Sorry.
L– This is a hard question to ask you off the top your head but what are your top three favorite beers?
G– Oh that’s rough…
L– Or just any three favorite You don’t have to say your top.
G– Ok I have to think about this. I am actually a really big fan of Samuel Smith’s Taddy Porter. That’s just a good every day drinking beer for me… well maybe not every day but that’s a good one …even though it doesn’t necessarily tend towards the craft movement. I really enjoy… oh boy… I really enjoy Shebeen’s Baby Seal Dance Party even though it’s kind of off style for me in terms of what I typically appreciate. That’s definitely one of my newer favorites. Yeah that’s a hard question
L– What about… what’s the one from… with the seal on it that you love?
G– Oh Smuttynose! I like a lot of Smuttynose beers. I know they… I know they recently sold their brewery so I’ll be interested to see how their beers change or stay the same.
G– I’m not sure…some crap like that yeah. But you know judge me if you want but I do like me a good pumpkin beer and Smuttynose makes a good one.
L– Yeah we actually have a 2014 imperial pumpkin ale [2014 Southern Tier Warlock] we found in the back of the fridge.
G– Oh God it’s probably going to be not too bueno right now.
L– What beer are you dying to try that you haven’t tried yet?
G– Beer I am dying to try? Hm despite the fact that I’m really not super into sours I would love to actually go to Hill Farmstead and try something there.
L– Well they have other stuff besides sours.
G– Yeah they do but I know their sours are kinda their bread and butter. But yeah I would love to actually go there and try something that I’ve never tried before from from them
L– Holy shit…so going back I just looked up Smuttynose sold only for $8 million…$8 million. “The Provident Bank was the winning bidder at Friday’s auction…” this is back in March… “held at the company’s 13 acre campus in Hampton, New Hampshire. The sale includes the Smuttynose beer brand, it’s facility and restaurant.” [Read from Boston.com article found here] For 8 million?!
G– Well we could’ve bought it.
L– Shit we could’ve gotten a bunch of people together and bought that shit.
G– We could stop doing the nonsense that we’re doing now.
L– Yeah we could have hung out in New Hampshire and drank and made beer. That was a missed opportunity…
G– Bummer
L– Alright what place have you been to that had the best beer scene?
G– I am really into the upstate New York beer scene right now. They are all lot of really good craft breweries opening up up there. West Kill Brewing in West Kill, New York way up in the Catskills is awesome. Um Suarez Family Brewing they’re in… gosh… I want to say they’re in… I can’t member the town… but yeah the upstate New York craft beer scene is really exploding and there a lot of people up there are brewing really really good beers.
L– Alright, what is your favorite brewery that you’ve visited?
G– I am going to have to go with West Kill. West Kill is a really cool spot. It’s in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the mountains with beautiful views. The owners are super cool and really nice people. They have I guess a family farm that, you know, they have taken part of and turn into their brewery and they opened a little tasting room that’s really cool, nice, rustic decor with a fireplace and stuff. It’s just a really low-key fun place to hang out and their beers are fantastic.
L– Nice I gotta go there.
G– Ya we’ll bring you.
L– So I think this is an easy one. I think I know what you’re gonna pick but I’m a sucker for a cute can. What do you think has the best can art?
G– Oh God well it’s got to be Baby Seal Dance Party yeah it’s the cutest thing ever and baby seals are my favorite animals so.
Kissing the can Grace got for me! From my insta @hopsandheart
L– It really is. Uh, what brewery are you most excited about? Like a new brewery…probably the one in Bethel?
G– Yeah Broken Symmetry in Bethel, Connecticut is really great. They opened up in the old train station and the owner…a part owner…she is one of our favorite local business proprietors. She owns two of our favorite restaurants in town and so she… she and another guy opened Broken Symmetry and they are making some good beers. They have yummy burritos. It’s a cool spot so I definitely am very excited for them. I think they’re going to do really well.
L– How do you preferred to drink beer? From the keg a cask, a can or a bottle?
G– I have to say probably keg first and then bottle.
L– Um besides beer what’s another favorite beverage?
G– I love a good single malt whiskey and here I am drinking a Mimosa. Good ol’ Mimosas and coffee yeah.
L– Any recommendations to read or listen or watch for a craft beer lover? A good movie or book or a magazine or blog or a podcast?
G– Well obviously I recommend Laura’s blog [Hopsandheart.com!] of course
L– Has social media helped you find out about new craft beers or um helped you share your love of craft beers?
G– It definitely has because I have a few friends that are huge on the beer scene and do a lot of posting on social media so a lot of the time like Mike [@darwinsdad] for example. So a lot of the time they’ll post something that, you know, maybe I’ve never seen before about a release for example the Baby Seal Dance Party release I found out about that um totally by accident. I think it was on Facebook so you know I’m definitely a big fan of checking Facebook and Instagram for people’s recommendations and following my friends who are into the beer scene
L– Yeah and where can we follow you on Instagram what is your Instagram handle
G– My Instagram handle is @yaybabyseals and I’m also on Untappd. I think I’m yaybabyseals there too.
L– Yeah cool alright thanks Grace.
G– Thanks Laura.
L– Cheers. Yes so after this we’re heading to Freewill tap room and then we’re going to go to Naked Brewing and then there’s some brewery by Naked Brewing but I don’t know what it is [it was Moss Mill and I liked it a lot!] But we’re just doing a PA or “Pennsy” if you will brewery hop so

11 I’m a sucker for a cute can. What beer do you think has the best bottle/ can art?
Humble Sea just celebrated their one year anniversary and I couldn’t be more impressed with what they’ve done and an even more excited for their future. They are great people making delicious beers.
13 What’s the most shameful beer you drank back in the day?
Bud heavy
14 Have you ever tried to home brew?
Yes three times, one IPA and Two Double IPAs. The first DIPA was definitely the only success.
15 Where is your favorite place to drink a beer?
Favorite would be in the mountains on a hike with a dog and then a lager /pilsner on the beach
16 How do you prefer to drink beer- keg, cask, can or bottle?
100% Can (can take it on adventures)
17 Besides beer what’s another favorite beverage?
A really good red wine. My favorite winery William Selyem
18 Any recommendations to read or listen to for craft beer lovers? (book, magazines, blog, podcast)
19 How has social media helped you share your love of craft beer? Any cool perks?Social media has helped me discover new beers, places to visit, and make new friends near and far. I am so grateful for all the connections craft beer has brought into my life.
Bella is truly one hoppy lady! She is has made a career out of her love of beer. Bella is a cicerone certified beer server, successful blogger and all around craft beer Insta-star. With a love of NEIPA’s and Cantillon, this truly is a girl after my own hoppy heart! Read below to find out how she got into beer, her favorite brews and more.
1 Where are you from?
Born in North Jersey, living in Brooklyn.
2 What beers can we find in your fridge right now?
A ton of beer from my most recent beercation down to Atlanta. I have some Orpheus sours, Monday Night, and Creature Comforts. I also have whatever samples end up there from work.
I used to do liquor/wine/beer promos to help pay for college. That’s kind of where I started tasting a lot of different things and when I started traveling a lot, I found myself constantly searching for the local microbreweries all over the country and eventually, the world.
6 What is your favorite style of beer?
It changes all the time, with the season or my mood. I love Goses, Flemish Reds, Kolsches, and NEIPAs.
I’ve tried some Cloudwater that I really liked, but it’s hard to get my hands on. I’ve also loved everything Monkish that I’ve had, but there’s no distribution out here for it.
9 What place have you been to that has the best beer scene? It’s hard to say because there are still so many places that I haven’t been to yet. I enjoyed Burlington, VT a lot when I visited a few years back. Awesome beer scene and being on Lake Champlain in the summer is just a great time.
10 What is your favorite brewery to visit? Favorite brewery I’ve ever visited would be Cantillon. There’s something very rustic and traditional about it. The atmosphere is humble and unpretentious, all things that many people don’t necessarily care for anymore.
11 I’m a sucker for a cute can. What beer do you think has the best bottle/ can art?
I’ve always liked the designs for To Øl. A lot of their artwork is very minimalistic with tons of negative space. Some of the labels are just textures. It’s always a label that actually looks like art, something I’d see in a gallery.
12 What new brewery are you most excited about?
I’m excited that Mikkeller just opened up a location in Citi Field. I’ve been to Mikkeller San Francisco and Mikkeller & Friends in Reykjavik before, but it’s nice to have one close to home. Also, I’m glad it’s at Citi Field because I already go to Mets games every year with my brother.
13 What’s the most shameful beer you drank back in the day?
I used to drink Corona Extra when I would go to this line dancing place that I loved, but that was only when I wasn’t drinking whiskey.
14 Have you ever tried to home brew?
Yes, I actually have my own set up. But I stopped brewing when I moved to Brooklyn a few years back due to lack of space. I would like to get back into it. I always have ideas for cool new beers. It’d be nice to actually produce and drink them!
15 Where is your favorite place to drink a beer?
Definitely somewhere warm and outdoors, on a beach or something. There are a few places back in NJ that I sorely miss — like Poor Henry’s and Cloverleaf Tavern — just because it feels like home. Those were the places that I could depend on to get the rare or obscure beers that other bars didn’t have.
16 How do you prefer to drink beer- keg, cask, can or bottle?
Keg if it’s available. Can if I’m outdoors.
17 Besides beer what’s another favorite beverage?
Pretty much everything. I love everything from mezcal to champagne, as long as the quality is good.
18 Any recommendations to read or listen to for craft beer lovers? (book, magazines, blog, podcast)
Tasting Beer by Randy Mosher is always what I recommend for people to start. It pretty much lays the groundwork for everything.
19 How has social media helped you share your love of craft beer? Any cool perks?Absolutely! I started just blogging as a way to remember all my travels and to help me take detailed notes on beers and breweries. It kind of caught traction on its own, a big part of that was due to instagram. There are tons of other beer bloggers and specifically, women, who have way bigger followings than I do now. But at the time, I was one of much fewer women who were writing and blogging about beer while being active on instagram. That’s helped me reach a lot more people and brought opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
For example, I got to host the Best Brews by Four Points NYC Kickoff event last summer where I got to teach a whole crowd of people about the beer tasting process. I’ve also gotten multiple job opportunities from my blog, whether it be on the beer side or on the writing/communications side. In fact, I’m currently in a position that I get to do both – beer communications – for a living!
Untappd: one hoppy lady (search with spaces) FYI- this is a bit outdated. I remember joining this app when it first came out and forcing all my friends to make one too. It was fun, but after beer-ing as both a serious hobby and a career, it gets pretty impossible to keep up!
Rachel AKA @beergogglesblog is a beer enthusiast from Chicago. Her love of craft beer and thirst for knowledge (#sorrylamepun) brought her all the way to “Beer School” at Beer Evaluation and inspired her to start working on her Cicerone Certification. You can read more about her experience on her blog. In the 20 question below Rachel talks about some pretty cool local breweries with some fantastic sounding beer.
1 Where are you from?
Chicago, IL
2 What beers can we find in your fridge right now?
Too many to name, I’d love to get my hands on one of the past years of Goose Island Bourbon Barrel Aged beers because I’ve heard amazing things!
9 What place have you been to that has the best beer scene?
I was very impressed by the craft beer scene in Nashville, but Chicago is my favorite scene, especially extending out into the suburbs.
10 What is your favorite brewery to visit?
Marz Community Brewing is my recent favorite – it recently opened in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago (near where the White Sox play). It’s incredible!
11 I’m a sucker for a cute can. What beer do you think has the best bottle/ can art?
Ok now I just sound obsessed, BUT Marz also has some amazing cans. Jungle Boogie is one of my favorites!
19 How has social media helped you share your love of craft beer? Any cool perks?
I’ve met some really cool people via Instagram. I was honestly surprised to see just how many people blog or post about beer specifically but it’s an exciting space!
Meet @AlesforFemales creator Victoria. She is new-ish to the craft beer community but has jumped right in with both feet! After finding a growler from a local brewery left behind while moving into her new home, she began exploring the local craft beer scene. As fate would have it, she now works for the brewery and is studying for her Cicerone certification. Read about her local favorite beers below.
1 Where are you from?
Born and raised in Houston, TX currently living in Nashville, Indiana working for a brewery!
2 What beers can we find in your fridge right now?
It all started 3 years ago when I moved to Indiana.
5 How did you get into craft beer?
When I moved from Texas to Indiana I bought my first house. The lady who had previously owned the home worked for a local brewery. That being said she left a growler behind from Quaff ON! I had no idea what it was so I took it to the brewery and was offered a tasting. I am now working here, getting my Cicerone certification and writing about beer. I started out drinking Bud Light and now I drink ONLY craft beer!
Meet @babels_cameron a.k.a. Tanya Lawrence. This gal is a major beer influencer and an experienced brewer. Last year she was named “one of the top women in craft beer to follow” by Men’s Health Magazine. Tanya has a wealth of knowledge and amazing insight into the beer world.
1 Where are you from?
I was born in Washington, DC and am a current resident of Cleveland, Ohio via Tampa, Florida.
Right now, I have apartments in both Cleveland, Ohio and Tampa, Florida. I commute between- and work in- both, so for Tampa Bay, I’d say my favorite craft breweries are going to be between Arkane Aleworks, Angry Chair, Coppertail, or Hidden Springs; and for Cleveland specifically, my favorite craft beer is going to be between Platform, Bottlehouse, or Masthead.
4 How long have you been loving the craft brews?
I’ve been drinking craft beer and touring craft breweries and distilleries for about thirteen years now.
5 How did you get into craft beer?
As previously mentioned, I started traveling specifically for craft beer a little over a decade ago now; touring breweries and distilleries throughout the east coast. I started posting my experiences in craft beer onto social media around 2014 and 2015, and in 2017 was named by Men’s Health Magazine as “one of the top women in craft beer to follow”. Although I never intended to have a beer-centric or carefully-curated Instagram, I felt a certain responsibility after which to earn that title, and so I began writing, and formally utilizing my social media platforms to shine a light on the craft breweries, brewers, and beer that I loved.
I was recently introduced to Great Notion, and after sipping only three brands of theirs in total, now want to drink any and all of their beers ever made available [laughs]. Aside from that, I have a handful of friends who have collaborations set to release soon — a couple specifically from my friends over at Chicago area-based Mikerphone — and I’m looking forward to those!
9 What place have you been to that has the best beer scene?
As much as we are all suckers for Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, and so forth, I’ve got to give it to Asheville, North Carolina. Not only is the liquid there golden, but there exists a comparable food and spirits scene there as well. And of course, once you tire of the beer and food and artisanal cocktails — if that’s even possible — you have a bevy of other phenomenal activities to enjoy: hiking, biking, rafting, or just indulging in the scenery and art culture there. Asheville is AMAZING.
10 What is your favorite brewery to visit?
SARA, hands down. There is something about their intimate, beautiful taproom — and all of beautiful surrounding Capitola — that feels so intensely intimate and special. I could crack bottles of saison there all day.
11 I’m a sucker for a cute can. What beer do you think has the best bottle/ can art?
I can narrow this down pretty easily by three breweries: KCBC’S bright, bold wholly-enveloping comic style cans, Finback’s gorgeously minimalist, clean designs — their use of color and iridescence is mesmerizing (think Oscillation or the gold application on Caviar 3XIPA) — and Voodoo Brewery’s fun, whimsical ones; the latter being fashioned by my friend Tom Ness, who is an amazing artist and has a great eye for color.
13 What’s the most shameful beer you drank back in the day?
Believe it or not, I spent my formative drinking years solely consuming wine and spirits. My first beer EVER was Allagash White, and so I suppose you could say I’ve been spoiled on good beer since. I could say that I’ve been known once to slam a random PBR or Coors Banquet on a dare, but there’s truly no shame here
14 Have you ever tried to home brew?
I have brewed both on professional- and [what we could consider] home brewing- systems. I’ve brewed an imperial stout aged in Buffalo Trace and Jefferson bourbon barrels at Big Top Brewing in Sarasota, Florida and also assisted in brewing a NEIPA-style hopped with Nelson and Citra with my friends Jason Toft (Crooked Thumb), John Lewis (Brew Hub), and Dean Palmer (Palmer Tropical Beverages)
15 Where is your favorite place to drink a beer?
It’s not a “where” as much as it is a “with who”. My favorite place to drink is beer is always going to be with friends. Over the past year, some of my most favorite experiences in beer have been at festivals, so in that vein, I’m supposing it’s also “the more the merrier…”
16 How do you prefer to drink beer- keg, cask, can or bottle?
I prefer to #drinkallthethings [laughs]. There’s no preference to medium.
17 Besides beer what’s another favorite beverage?
Champagne. Give me all the champagne.
18 Any recommendations to read or listen to for craft beer lovers? (book, magazines, blog, podcast)
The best piece of advice I can give is to follow whatever you love on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. It’s been said a person checks their phone on average eighty-four times a day [laughs] I can wager that a heft of that is spent on social media. Whatever you love — FOLLOW it. Be it Draft or All About Beer Magazine, Hop Culture, Porch Drinking, your favorite breweries, favorite brewers, or favorite reviews or personalities. Follow them. There’s no better way of seeing real-time updates and obtaining up-to-the-minute information than via social media.
19 How has social media helped you share your love of craft beer? Any cool perks?
Obviously enough, social media has allowed me to reach an audience greater than ever imagined. From the United States to Brazil to Mexico to the UK, I am able to reach tens of thousands of imbibers with just a single post. From this, I’ve shared dialogue with a lot of great thinkers, drinkers, and brewers; and have had the opportunity to drink beer from all over the world and attend festivals and conferences all over the country. I’ve always said that at the end of the day, my account isn’t about me, it’s about shining a light on the breweries, brewers, and liquid that I love, so if I can influence or encourage even one person to try a beer that I love or visit a brewery or taproom that I think is out here doing amazing things, then I know I’m doing something right.
Yay! it’s actually Wednesday. This week I got to interview Kristine, a triple threat Craft Beer Chick from San Diego, California! She works at a brewery (Culture Brewing), blogs and is a successful craft beer influencer with over 11k Instagram followers. Check out the interview below.
1 Where are you from?
Currently I live in Carlsbad California just 30 minutes up the coast from San Diego, but very much in the heart of the beer culture here in North San Diego County.
2 What beer can we find in your fridge right now?
I just finished up writing a blog on my go-to beer. The one that I couldn’t imagine life without…and it was Aurora Hoppyalis! This has been a local Karl Strauss favorite of mine for awhile now. A beer that is always just a solid American IPA and never disappoints.
3 What is your favorite local beer?
Session Amarillo IPA by Culture Brewing Co. I have worked for Culture for 4 1/2 years now and absolutely adore this beer! I’m drinking it while working, bringing it home in my growler, and even have it on tap at my house when we have it in rotation.
4 How long have you been loving the craft brews?
Around 7 years ago I started to notice the term “craft beer” …I don’t even want to think about what I used to drink!
5 How did you get into craft beer?
Around that time, with time to kill in Escondido. I wandered into Stone Brewing and ended up leaving with my first glass growler. Filled with Arrogant Bastard go figure…you could say I jumped right in!
6 What is your favorite style of beer?
I am definitely an IPA girl, but super excited when I find a Session IPA that satisfies and tastes full bodied. This way I can drink several!
7 What are your top 3 favorite beers?
My favorite beers are constantly changing, but I can tell you the styles I’ve been solidly in love with for awhile now?! IPA’s, Sour Farmhouse Ales (the more earthy funk and barnyard the better) and a fruited Gose…any with apricot always catch my eye.
8 What beer are you dying to try?
Jester King from Austin Texas has a Funk Metal Series, and one style is a Sour Barrel-Aged Stout at 8.2% refermented with cherries. I’d sure love to get my hands on this one some day!
9 What place have you been to that has the best beer scene?
San Diego. I might be biased though
10 What is your favorite brewery to visit?
I always love visiting my friends at Booze Brothers Brewing in Vista. I’ve seen their growth from day one, and respect their hard work, creativity and loyalty to the beer community.
11 I’m a sucker for a cute can. What beer do you think has the best bottle/ can art?
Not being one for bright colors and confusion I’ve always loved Booze Brothers look. They have had Ben Horton on design now for awhile, and you can see the continuity in each release over the years.
12 What new brewery are you most excited about?
Northern Pine in Oceanside opened recently and is 5 minutes from my house. They make outstanding beer, and have joined up with my favorite local BBQ joint, That Boy Good! Win Win!
13 What’s the most shameful beer you drank back in the day?
Oh I had a feeling you would ask this question at some point! Gosh…I did drink my fare share of Coronas, but I also liked a sweet lemon drink called Hooch. Not sure what the heck it even was, Malt Liquor perhaps?! I hear it is making a comeback!
14 Have you ever tried to home brew?
Yes I have home brewed before, but in the end I’ve decided that it is easier to bring amazing beer home from work than drink the iffy beer I’ve brewed!
15 Where is your favorite place to drink a beer?
Easy, the beach! It’s the best way to relax.
16 How do you prefer to drink beer- keg, cask, can or bottle?
Not a fan of beer on cask because I’m a stickler for full carbonation. That being said, I use my 64oz stainless double-insulated growler for everything! Fill it at work, fill it from my keg at home or even pour a few cans in there. Keeps it all perfectly cold!
17 Besides beer what’s another favorite beverage?
Kombucha. Brewing a little at home right now!
18 Any recommendations to read or listen to for craft beer lovers? (book, magazines, blog, podcast)
The best way to learn about craft beer is to drink all the beer in all the places! But seriously, exposure to as many styles as possible. Also, follow all the breweries on Instagram because they love to talk about beer and brewing when asked.
19 How has social media helped you share your love of craft beer? Any cool perks?
Sure! I always love when a brewery invites me for a visit! When there are almost 160 in San Diego sometimes I need a little direction!
Okay, I know it’s not Wednesday but I was excited to start this page. I loved meeting, interviewing and supporting other Craft Beer Ladies!
Meet Kara from Canada, a woman after my own hoppy heart. She followed her craft beer dreams and opened her own bottle shop Thumbprint Craft Beer Market in Jan 2017. This is not just any bottle shop. It is the FIRST shop in Western Canada dedicated to craft beer! If you don’t already follow her you probably should @kara_bo_BEER_a
In 2011 I went to a wine tasting after having my daughter. Since I hadn’t drank for over a year I drank way too much, like white girl wasted! A glass of wine still turns my stomach 7 years later! My hubby recalls me craving beer throughout my pregnancy as well.
19 How has social media helped you share your love of craft beer? Any cool perks?
It has connected me with amazing trading partners and sparked passionate convos about great beer! I opened my own bottle shop called Thumbprint Craft Beer Market in Jan 2017(1st dedicated craft beer shop in Western Canada #facts) and received lots of support from my beer buddies.
